Working with volunteers is an excellent community-building activity. We can also combine it with lectures or training. We supervise the laying out of the labyrinth, with volunteers doing most of the work. Usually, the materials are simple, such as stones and mulch. In one of the examples pictured below, we used a sod cutter to remove the grass and then filled the void with asphaltic gravel. It was extremely labor intensive. Had we hired laborers to do the work, the cost would have increased by at least $3,000. With volunteers, the labyrinth cost under a thousand dollars.Another type of labyrinth which is inexpensive but labor intensive is a turf labyrinth, in which the paths are dug out by hand and the lines are formed with the piled dirt.
